Whilst jostling through the crowds at this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair, we couldn’t help but notice that the art world appears to be evolving into something far more dramatic.
Instead of the expected politically-charged works, that are the usual fare at local events, what instead appears to be emerging is an appetite for exciting experimentation and risk-taking. There is boldness in the exploration of new mediums and ceramics…sculpture (in all forms) is firmly on this refreshed sensory menu.
Great examples of this immersive shift include the work of Marlene Steyn, Amy Rusch and Jake Aikman – all exploring worlds of thick texture and layers of dream-like vignettes.
We came away from the CTICC feeling incredibly optimistic about the future of the local art category as a whole. There is a vibrancy in the work and clear demand from clientele that signals that this is a sector that has its sights set on successful expansion.
